Purpose of Policy

The purpose of this policy is to set expectations regarding where smoking, tobacco, and similar products are prohibited on the Gettysburg College campus.

Scope of Policy

This policy applies to all individuals on College property including employees, students, families, alumni, visitors, contractors, and vendors.

Definitions

College Property: All College-owned or leased land, buildings, structures, vehicles, and outdoor spaces.

Smoking: The burning of tobacco or any other substance, including but not limited to cigarettes, cigars, pipes, and hookahs/water pipes.

Tobacco/Nicotine Product: Any product containing or derived from tobacco or nicotine, including but not limited to cigarettes, cigars, pipes, hookahs, chewing tobacco, snuff, e-cigarettes, vape pens, and electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS).

Vaping/E-cigarettes: The use of electronic devices that produce aerosol or vapor, including e-cigarettes, vape pens, electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), and heated tobacco products.

Athletic Facilities: All indoor and outdoor facilities owned, leased, or operated by the College for athletic or recreational purposes, including but not limited to competition fields, practice fields, stadiums, courts, tracks, and any adjacent spectator areas, parking lots, and support structures associated with these venues.

Policy Description

Smoking, vaping, and the use of e-cigarettes and all tobacco and nicotine products is prohibited inside all College-owned or leased buildings, including all recognized student housing and all indoor and outdoor athletic facilities. The use of these products also is prohibited in (or within 15 feet of) outdoor dining venues where food is regularly served and consumed, including the Bullet Hole patio, Beer Garden, and Library patio. Additionally, the use of these products is prohibited in any College-owned or leased vehicles. Finally, the use of these products is prohibited within 15 feet of all building entrances, exits, and operable windows.

Responsibilities

All individuals using tobacco or nicotine products are responsible for properly disposing of all related litter, including cigarette butts, vaping cartridges, and packaging, in appropriate receptacles.

Information about tobacco cessation for employees is available through the Human Resources Office.

Students seeking tobacco and nicotine cessation support should contact College Life.

Policy Management

For employees, enforcement rests with individual supervisors in consultation with the Executive Director of Human Resources.

For students, enforcement rests with the Office of College Life.

For contractors and vendors, enforcement rests with the office or department responsible for the engagement.

For visitors, enforcement rests with Campus Safety.
